Extra, Extra, Read All About It!
A democracy relies upon informed citizens. But how do those citizens get accurate, objective information? Television, newspaper and radio journalists are often the only link to what is going on in the world. Can their information be relied upon? Just how do journalists maintain integrity and navigate ethical dilemmas when reporting the news?
This course is a hands-on introduction to careers in journalism, covering writing style, media law, editing, video, online/social media and photography. It highlights some of the challenges that journalists face. You will investigate the writing process used by journalists – expository, persuasive, and narrative skills used in the development of print, web and various broadcast media. You will also examine the purpose of different writing genres in journalistic expression, the nuances of writing for a particular audience and the urgent questions facing journalists around the world. After a visit to one or two active media outlets in Houston’s bustling information trade, you will create a final project to test your journalistic skills.
