Decision 2008: Presidential Campaigns and Elections

How can a presidential candidate expect to win a campaign without participating in public debates?  Why are these presidential candidates ducking an important issue?    This class will examine the anatomy of a presidential election campaign.  Participants learn how campaigns have evolved since George Washington’s election, with special attention paid to presidential contests in recent decades. We will focus on the ongoing 2008 election, comparing and contrasting it to past models. The increasing influence of the mass media, interest groups, and political consultants will be evaluated from the standpoint of how well American democracy is served by the style and substance of modern political campaigning.
