The Flower Garden Banks: A Marine Case Study

In this course students will learn about the geology, chemistry, physics, biology and ecology of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, which is located in the Gulf and accessible by many local dive charters here in Houston.  The Flower Garden is known for its colorful sponges, corals, fish, and invertebrates.  Participants will begin with an understanding of the abiotic parameters that define this ecosystem along with information on how the “bank” was formed.  Then students will learn about the organisms that have adapted to this ecosystem and the interspecies relationships.  Studies will culminate with current issues of managing and preserving the sanctuary.
